PSHE and Relationship and Sex Education

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)

Summer 2 2026 onwards

At Long Marston, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) is a well-established part of our curriculum, supporting children’s understanding of relationships, wellbeing, and personal development.

In line with updated statutory guidance from September 2026, we are reviewing our RSE policy and curriculum and are consulting with parents on some proposed changes.

RSE is taught during Summer 2 using the Jigsaw scheme of work, alongside resources from the school nursing team and BBC. Lessons are delivered in a safe, age-appropriate way, with children taught in year groups to ensure content matches their stage of development.

Proposed Updates

We are proposing some adjustments to better support children’s understanding before they leave primary school:

  • Teaching about periods in Year 4 to all pupils (not just girls)
  • Introducing conception in Year 5 rather than Year 6
  • Strengthening the focus on positive self-image and consent

Knowledge organisers for each year group, including updated content on puberty and human reproduction, are available on our website (below).

Key Information

Relationships Education is statutory and all pupils take part. The sex education elements, taught in Years 5 and 6, are not statutory, and parents have the right to withdraw their child from these lessons.

Parent Consultation

We value your feedback on these proposed changes. If you have any comments or questions, please contact Laura Whatley via the school office or speak to your child’s teacher. Your views will help shape our final RSE policy and curriculum.
